Do Not Disturb

Today was full of meetings. Meetings about things that I'll have no power to change and which involved a fair amount of head-nodding/kowtowing. I'm getting quite good at this though I had a fair few moments during which I was thinking: Why? Why am I here when I could be doing some work (i.e. writing, reading, answering students' emails). With the growth in the number of students this term (each of my classes is larger than last semester and I am supervising theses of almost a dozen students), I'm rather overwhelmed. This is exemplified by my non appearance at any non-uni related activities lately and by the state of my apartment (which has clothes/books/dishes strewn around). I hope to do something about this latter if not the former.

Though I may well spend time doing this (nicked off here):

I love how it plays around with genres and perceptions--the lad in a hoodie rapping away is actually talking about reading a book!

But you *look* Muslim (so you must be dangerous)

I nicked an idea off this this morning and told my Human Geography class I'd been in Finland over the past couple of days. They obviously didn't get it. Then I added I'd stepped over to South Africa and had a quick jaunt to Ghana on my way back. It got me a laugh from one of my classes. Lots of blank stony stares from the other. Pretty much defines how my classes are going really.

My Civ of Asia lot is fantastic. I've got a couple of old students and a classful of people willing to discuss the many (and varied) representations of rabbits (in European and non-European civilizations/pop culture). As always, I feel this class could be so much more if divided into two semesters or even if I could talk about contemporary civilizations. Today, for example, we went through 1500 years of Southeast Asian history with slightly longer stops for the Khmers and Srivijaya in about an hour.
